The occurrence of rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), named the “rape capital of the world” by the United Nations (UN), is 26 times higher than the 16,000 yearly rapes previously reported by the UN.

Ms. Magazine reports a new national study released Wednesday reveals 400,000, nearly half a million, women were raped in that Africa nation in the 12-month period between 2006 and 2007, a rate of 1,152 women every day — 48 women raped every hour.
